In one week's time the second half of the 2011 season of Doctor Who gets underway, and will hopefully answer some very important questions (and stop us feeling quite so guilty about giving up on the current series of Torchwood). How does the whole River thing work? Why is the lady with the eyepatch such a total bitch? How many times will Rory die? Will Amy continue to be a whiny twerp? Head under the cut for some first half discussion, the trailer for the upcoming episodes, and a wee bit of gloating by yours truly.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Firstly, the gloating. The last episode before the mid season break aired on the 5th of June, and at the end of that episode we discover that River is Amy and Rory's baby from the fuuuutuuuure. I tweeted the following on the 30th of May:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCuS1YEDHPP-8YzRVj63NhyphenhyphenGULHiLWuje_BM2HtfMk6N0xtcAIORv7PXPscDyA-lddNWw4tjgms46vTtPKOjNjHrwmMGpd_KxceduN21Q8pprt0K-Wp_ZpsEg0aERQRUPF4WM4C2MHI4g6/s1600/drwhotweet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCuS1YEDHPP-8YzRVj63NhyphenhyphenGULHiLWuje_BM2HtfMk6N0xtcAIORv7PXPscDyA-lddNWw4tjgms46vTtPKOjNjHrwmMGpd_KxceduN21Q8pprt0K-Wp_ZpsEg0aERQRUPF4WM4C2MHI4g6/s1600/drwhotweet.jpg" /></a></div><br />
I did actually start to get an inkling two or three episodes into the season, but it seemed like such a ridiculous theory that I pretty much dismissed it. There's a lesson here people. If you think it, tweet it. Eventually you'll get something right.<br />
<br />
So, when we left our intrepid time-travellers in 'A Good Man Goes To War', Rory and the Doctor had found Amy on board the asteroid base 'Demon's Run', the baby was there, and everyone thought everything was hunky dory. Turns out the baby was actually a 'Flesh' avatar, and when Madame Kovarian (eyepatch lady) reappeared and told the baby to wake up it dissolved into liquid in Amy's arms. Amy was not very happy with this turn of events. River (who had been absent for most of the episode) turned up and everyone was all 'WTF, River? Where the hell were you all this time??' Meaningful looks were exchanged, the Doctor had his lightbulb moment, and rushed off in the TARDIS to rescue the real version of the kid. Amy and Rory, still completely in the dark, are then informed by River that, SURPRISE! She's their kid. From the future. So she can't actually really help rescue herself, cause that would be weird.<br />
<br />
<center><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="345" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/76vzfxJRByA" width="560"></iframe></center><br />
The opening episode of Season 6 Part 2 is titled 'Let's Kill Hitler', and while some of the word on the street has made it sound a bit horrible, the BBC synopsis obviously makes it sound a little more enticing:<br />
<br />
<i>'In the desperate search for Melody Pond, the TARDIS crash lands in 1930s Berlin, bringing the Doctor face to face with the greatest war criminal in the Universe. And Hitler. The Doctor must teach his adversaries that time travel has responsibilities – and in so doing, learns a harsh lesson in the cruellest warfare of all.'</i><br />
<br />
It will be interesting to see how they handle the subject matter in this episode. You can hardly have an episode with Hitler in it and then have the Doctor running around with his goofy slapstick humour. I'm hoping for quite a lot from the second half of this season, mainly due to the fact I've been quite disappointed thus far. I really love Matt Smith as the Doctor (far more than I thought I would), and there's been some great MOMENTS over the last season and a half, but it's really failed to click for me. It very much feels like the weekly storytelling has been sacrificed to give time to overly convoluted story arcs. Does 'the crack' match up to 'Bad Wolf'? Is 'Melody Pond' as good as 'Vote Saxon?' My vote is for no. So I'm crossing my fingers that the end of this season brings back some of the love that has been slowly fading.<br />
<br />
Let me love you again, Doctor! I want to love you!<br />
<br />
(Amy, feel free to leave any time you want).<br />

It's been a little bit quiet round these parts for the last couple of weeks, but for good reason! A group of pop culture enjoyers (including yours truly) have decided to pool our talents to create a SUPERBLOG. The Voltron of blogs, if you will. This does not mean the end of Wall of Nerd of course, but it does mean that if I'm being a bit quiet with posting you can always pop over to <a href="http://www.fruitlesspursuits.com/">Fruitless Pursuits</a> and read the other great content generated by all my pals.<br />
<br />
Go on! Go! Over there! Now!Jacintahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02693089490090435345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749144058687328743.post-52308922356161260362011-08-08T15:27:00.000+08:002011-08-08T15:27:51.606+08:00Sunday HNNNG #2A somewhat belated Sunday HNNNG, but it's still Sunday in...Honolulu. So it's technically still okay. You may notice there has been a couple of weeks in between hnnngs. I did originally plan to make it a weekly event, but nothing really stood out to me as a true hnnng in the last fortnight.<br />
<br />
UNTIL NOW.<br />
<br />
You may be aware of my recent minor infatuation with <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1055413/">Michael Fassbender</a> (you know, Magneto), an infatuation that I'm admittedly rather proud of myself for, as crushing on a manly man is much more satisfactory than the girly boys I tend to go for.<br />
<br />
ANYWAY.<br />
<br />
He recently starred in an adaption of Jane Eyre that has been out in the rest of the world for months, but is not out in Australia for another week (oh, the pain). I stumbled across the following cover the other day in my searching of the googlemachines:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg8BQdftQ_3GrT7sPD3ZCl1KOwllENSQhQPr1LoiMXJkgQhpLggTj0KkFAToZULjhnmhUrvg1xoJOx3FfEIdH6xnKCPc1dU1Kj9IeqMShu20mv0YK36yZlaWT29DdStZdlomK-YvIQIy0w/s1600/fassbender.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg8BQdftQ_3GrT7sPD3ZCl1KOwllENSQhQPr1LoiMXJkgQhpLggTj0KkFAToZULjhnmhUrvg1xoJOx3FfEIdH6xnKCPc1dU1Kj9IeqMShu20mv0YK36yZlaWT29DdStZdlomK-YvIQIy0w/s1600/fassbender.jpg" /></a> </div><br />
Oh. My. I hear there were a lot of insurance claims stemming from that photoshoot. All the ladies in the immediate area became spontaneously pregnant after witnessing his carnal gaze.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJAm2kclTuzhQUZZj1_80VLFiJkkXT5NkL-FCdUL3zPmDAmYsU6CoFpLT6guFJAcsQipYuVK49AqmZog1s-f2G3bt0S4cGP70jI5TBg0lLfrjwgIhmT9MLAR85DS0XaUmO0O-04kgXS14V/s1600/fassbender1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJAm2kclTuzhQUZZj1_80VLFiJkkXT5NkL-FCdUL3zPmDAmYsU6CoFpLT6guFJAcsQipYuVK49AqmZog1s-f2G3bt0S4cGP70jI5TBg0lLfrjwgIhmT9MLAR85DS0XaUmO0O-04kgXS14V/s1600/fassbender1.jpg" /></a> </div><br />
HNNNG. Yes, that's right. REQUIRED READING MATERIAL. I did English Literature in high school, which was wonderful in that it started my life-long love of Shakespeare, but bad in the respect that it was brain-smashingly hard and almost resulted in me failing Year 12.<br />
<br />
Most of the required material is incredibly tedious when you're 16. I was actually really surprised to find I still had these books. The only one that appears to be missing is <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedda_Gabler">Hedda Gabler</a>, but I had such a special hate for that book that I suspect it may have met a fiery end post-graduation. I've decided to revisit these now that I'm somewhat more 'mature' to see if they're any more enjoyable. Except Hedda Gabler. Just reading the synopsis on Wikipedia just about put me into convulsions.<br />
<br />
Let's have a look at what we've got:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOHHF_XxdjcLaJ-3aWzRj6m-bALnl0JSx2RNk_0f8P3IIY0gk1bce7vUjZNODp6wMk4gA4goJpvTc1Go5lUUlViSSfXcpMwcgZrbCK6AmKbKMFeyUYFfL5H3UzIKyEYdgkQ-OOuBXASxim/s1600/handmaidstale.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOHHF_XxdjcLaJ-3aWzRj6m-bALnl0JSx2RNk_0f8P3IIY0gk1bce7vUjZNODp6wMk4gA4goJpvTc1Go5lUUlViSSfXcpMwcgZrbCK6AmKbKMFeyUYFfL5H3UzIKyEYdgkQ-OOuBXASxim/s1600/handmaidstale.jpg" /></a></div><b>The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood</b><br />
<br />
<b>What I remember: </b>In a dystopian future, women are slaves. They wear red, they breed, they hang out.<b> </b><br />
<br />
<b>What Wikipedia says: </b>The Handmaid's Tale is set in the near future in the Republic of Gilead, a country formed within the borders of what was formerly the United States of America. It was founded by a racist, male chauvinist, nativist, theocratic-organized military coup as an ideologically driven response to the pervasive ecological, physical and social degradation of the country.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<b>What I remember: </b>Africa. Some crazy white dude. Tim Roth (we watched the movie after we finished the book).<b> </b><br />
<br />
<b>What Wikipedia says:</b> The story centres on Charles Marlow, who narrates most of the book. He is an Englishman who takes a foreign assignment from a Belgian trading company as a ferry-boat captain in Africa. Heart of Darkness exposes the dark side of European colonization while exploring the three levels of darkness that the protagonist, Marlow, encounters: the darkness of the Congo wilderness, the darkness of the Europeans' cruel treatment of the natives, and the unfathomable darkness within every human being for committing heinous acts of evil.<br />
<br />

<br />
<b>What I remember: </b>Black guy...something something...a-hole white guy named after the parrot in Aladdin...something something...conflict.<br />
<br />
<b>What Wikipedia says: </b>WAY TOO MANY THINGS. In summary, Othello is a black guy in the army and a total badass. He's married to a chick called Desdemona. He's got a buddy called Iago who gets really pissed off when Othello promotes a younger guy called Cassio head of him. Iago proceeds to ruin the shit out of everyone's lives. Cause he can.<br />
<br />
In all honesty I probably won't read this one again, but I have been wanting to re-watch a modern adaption called '<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O_%28film%29">O</a>' starring Mekhi Phifer, Julia Stiles & Josh Hartnett (oh, early 00s, I love you), so will probably do that instead.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHeQb7MVMOCSKjUpRywi2VTnX3sR3g0GljLdAsj8jGQvDsK5opIibC3xcAraVsWVH6tff4DrTl1H4vMUJWSkEDUEdXnk4r8ifEzQ80ARLmymYWmFrDtsWP8xwyJ-fY5IKPxs0S04cb_cQi/s1600/prideandprejudice.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHeQb7MVMOCSKjUpRywi2VTnX3sR3g0GljLdAsj8jGQvDsK5opIibC3xcAraVsWVH6tff4DrTl1H4vMUJWSkEDUEdXnk4r8ifEzQ80ARLmymYWmFrDtsWP8xwyJ-fY5IKPxs0S04cb_cQi/s1600/prideandprejudice.jpg" /></a></div><b>Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen</b><br />
<br />
<b>What I remember: </b>It being really boring til we got the watch the BBC version. Ey-o! No, I do like P&P, but until you get it into your brain that Mr Darcy is a super Hottie McHottiepants, the book goes like this: Fairly nice girl has a whole lot of idiot sisters and an idiot mother. One idiot sister loves the new bland rich boy in the neighbourhood. Bland rich boy's friend is a frigid douchebag who is in general quite a douchebag to the fairly nice girl. The most idiot of the idiot sisters runs off with a total manslut, so frigid douchebag goes and finds them. Turns out he was only a douchebag cause he totally loved the fairly nice girl. Fairly nice girl marries him. You never find out if he stops being frigid.<br />
<b> </b><br />
<br />
<br />
I don't plan on reading this again, I have read/seen it ten million times. It's just an excuse for a picture of Colin Firth. The actual caption on this picture when I found it was 'Ideal Breeding Material'. TRUTH. Would also accept <a href="http://i.fanpix.net/images/orig/y/k/ykia342bq9f49q44.jpg">Matthew McFayden</a> as potential babydaddy.<br />
<br />
There are a couple of other books I'm going to add to this list even though they technically weren't school books. They feel like they should have been though.<br />
<br />

<br />
I'm currently reading this for the first time, so no memories. I am quite enjoying it, even though there have been quite a few passages I've skimmed due to preachy God things. Though even those are ok in the end cause the character will say something along the lines of 'If I suffer without complaining, then God will like me and I'll get into heaven' and Jane will be all 'What is WRONG with you??' Very much looking forward to the movie, and not just for The Fassbender. Though I'm looking forward to The Fassbender a lot.<br />

This book was gifted to me by my Year 10 English teacher from his personal library, but I must admit I'm yet to read it. I saw the movie adaption '<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Love_and_War_%281996_film%29">In Love and War</a>' starring the dreamy Chris O'Donnell and the sassy Sandra Bullock, but that's as far as I got. It's totally my sort of thing, wartime romance and all that, so I'm not sure why I haven't bothered to tackle it before now.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
My task is set! Keep an eye on the Currently Reading section in the sidebar to see what I'm up to in my quests. I may or may not reblog about the books at the end, cause it'll probably be quite boring to read 'No, they were all just as boring as they were 10 years ago', but we'll see how it goes.<br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">I am only a recent iPhone owner. I bought a second-hand 3Gs about six months ago because the idea of getting an iPhone4 and having a micro sim & not being able to immediately switch the sim to another phone if the current phone died horrified me. I'd bought myself an iPod Touch prior so I could try out this 'app' business and see if it was going to be something I would use. A few months later the second hand phone was offered, and the rest is history.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I AM NOW COMPLETELY DEPENDANT ON THIS DAMN THING.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I check my emails on my phone, I check all my social media accounts on my phone, I watch videos on my phone, I look things up on my phone, I do my banking on my phone, I play games on my phone...</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">And I suppose I make phonecalls too. Sometimes.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Even though I am painfully addicted to Tiny Tower, and I check Echofon every five seconds, my favourite apps are easily the inventory ones. I have a lot of crap, in various forms. I often come home with doubles of CDs and DVDs cause I can't remember what I do and don't have, so being able to have every single stupid thing I own at my fingertips is a godsend. Pop below the cut to check out my favourite inventory apps.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><a name='more'></a>The ones I'm using most at the moment are all by a group called <a href="http://hookedinmotion.com/">Hooked In Motion</a>. Their apps can be found in the App Store under the 'iCollect' prefix. I think they're about $3 each, but there was recently a price adjustment for Aussie users, so don't quote me on that. They have 6 different iCollect apps, but at the moment I'm only using 4: Books, Comic Books, Movies, and Music. The things I really like about HIM apps in general is that it's easy to add items (99% of the time I just use the in-built barcode scanner), changing the image on an entry is just a matter of a quick in-app Google search rather than having to take/upload your own photo, they are super easy to back up to the web, and then you can SHARE your web-based collection with whoever you want. For example, this is my (very small) <a href="http://www.icollectmedia.com/collection/comic/mojojay/?display=">comic collection</a>. The day when everyone has these and you don't have to guess what people do and don't own when you're trying to buy presents will be a HAPPY DAY.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Let's have a look at the individual apps.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYUm2wLXxdSbT7PO31ReZY9_mnz1Qf5PSHYDDZxefzwyS7Nj1gwBVeZdDF-sfehxMHfLbobcpFwlmmynCEDv7QIrZW26-DxbaGEcORkxoEB6qwMPnxKpjyyPAfFBaaNFmog2s-cdLGHUXN/s1600/apps.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYUm2wLXxdSbT7PO31ReZY9_mnz1Qf5PSHYDDZxefzwyS7Nj1gwBVeZdDF-sfehxMHfLbobcpFwlmmynCEDv7QIrZW26-DxbaGEcORkxoEB6qwMPnxKpjyyPAfFBaaNFmog2s-cdLGHUXN/s1600/apps.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">DiscTracker was actually an app I REALLY liked, but I was swayed by the uniformity of those nice red HIM apps. Also, DiscTracker didn't have the Google integration for the CD covers like iCollect Music did. The app itself looked great, but because I couldn't be bothered uploading a whole lot of album covers myself, there's a lot of blank spaces. And that bothers me.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">iCollect Comics</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The interface is clean and simple, which is good. The only thing I'd like to maybe see added in the future for all the HIM apps is a choice of colour schemes. This one is nice, but looks a little sterile. The bottom menu lists the number of items you have, your Wishlist (I don't have anything in there currently), a search option for your collection, the sync button for backup, and settings for layout customisation. I have Type/Year/Condition as my options underneath the title, but you can choose whatever you want to display. And if you select one of the individual comics you get...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ1n1mBfwWXXtxjTAhRP5cuqxFLfq7yZlvd55mZjUOGVnSfws245uyBHEB_Zvn_mVzoM2749ZCkZ4tVASwh6hzHAo-5ue4694Cc6DUFz9s3av51LBJdlV8IFyMYzr_hAd8pWCSVx8NI4qu/s1600/comics2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ1n1mBfwWXXtxjTAhRP5cuqxFLfq7yZlvd55mZjUOGVnSfws245uyBHEB_Zvn_mVzoM2749ZCkZ4tVASwh6hzHAo-5ue4694Cc6DUFz9s3av51LBJdlV8IFyMYzr_hAd8pWCSVx8NI4qu/s1600/comics2.jpg" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">A million billion things to fill in! Seriously, there are so many. Thankfully I think the minimum is just the title and the issue, so if you want to be lazy you can. Being that I pretty much only own trade paperbacks and volumes it makes things a bit tricky when it comes to entering an 'issue', cause it looks to be set up for floppies or whatever the kids are calling them these days. Ideally, I'd like there to be an option for '#1-7' or similar in the case of TPBs, at the moment hypens aren't an option.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">iCollect Movies</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: left;">Same again as far as layout goes, the main difference is really just the options for under the title. Lots to choose from, yet again. With all the apps there's an option to display the items in list form (like I do), or in a 'bookshelf' type mode, with just the covers.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibEoB9jSzPH16_Klj-3wcm-8Be_pEBNx7yWYKVB_Rxav22W_lN4gHI6Gh5R32RBCt4t6I1ChSeVkZ4wg3BLPa6YFyC_iRlFuC56UaxDvujJheiD-vc4VYKm6M_MgBO6o8W0US4_E4BayK5/s1600/movies2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibEoB9jSzPH16_Klj-3wcm-8Be_pEBNx7yWYKVB_Rxav22W_lN4gHI6Gh5R32RBCt4t6I1ChSeVkZ4wg3BLPa6YFyC_iRlFuC56UaxDvujJheiD-vc4VYKm6M_MgBO6o8W0US4_E4BayK5/s1600/movies2.jpg" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The movie app and the book app are the only ones thus far to be updated with the new tweet/share buttons. It'd be kinda cool to tweet if you've bought a new comic, but if someone tweeted while adding in their entire music collection...unfollow.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">iCollect Books</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: left;">I initially came across a few problems when using the book & comic apps. Because I do have quite a few TPBs, some of them were scanning up as 'books' as opposed to 'comics' and the app wasn't allowing me to add them on at all. A quick email to the devs sorted it out, and I haven't had a problem since, so I'm guessing that their database of information is getting bigger and ironing out classification kinks.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBY_jsO8ktBqSNZW52xMv2qkC2w0PwSZXpCRFTakb6ZQo95tZzntyypbibncOJXEwnEqAaChyphenhyphenpX0FCz1X0UM5OExihcEYysz8tPs5lF_5xTEur6122WbVvKfebiB0r8gmGG6kBpGENEzjh/s1600/books2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBY_jsO8ktBqSNZW52xMv2qkC2w0PwSZXpCRFTakb6ZQo95tZzntyypbibncOJXEwnEqAaChyphenhyphenpX0FCz1X0UM5OExihcEYysz8tPs5lF_5xTEur6122WbVvKfebiB0r8gmGG6kBpGENEzjh/s1600/books2.jpg" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">So when I put my books in 90% of them were put into either the 'Popular Culture', 'Photography' or 'Fantasy' catagories. My tastes aren't overly varied, tbh. And don't worry, I'm not a heathen who only owns 41 books, I haven't got around to putting them all in yet. I've put my bigger reference-type books in, but hardly any of my novels.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">iCollect Music</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: left;">The music app was always going to be the most important one for me. I wanted to make sure the app was totally what I was after before I committed to scanning my entire collection in. Cause I have a lot of cds. Those 105? That's A and B. Actually, I don't think I quite finished B. So A and MOST of B. The one issue I have with this one (which was nearly a dealbreaker) is the way the albums are displayed. They're alphabetised by the artist/band name, sure, but I feel like I'd really rather have the band name as a heading, and then the album name under that. The DiscTracker app I'd been using before looked like this:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipXncQqXVtCGa7rW1AIibXN6U7iyM0GzUyu_SNvIRBwQE-r4AxZ1vtRTLo9WN8Lc9Zml5mDF6Yxz8tSV-Jvsu2vFyshw_BlfiHqNaZcqn8VTR10X27qHnKFdwoBI9qMSEHm0N878UiKRtM/s1600/cds3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipXncQqXVtCGa7rW1AIibXN6U7iyM0GzUyu_SNvIRBwQE-r4AxZ1vtRTLo9WN8Lc9Zml5mDF6Yxz8tSV-Jvsu2vFyshw_BlfiHqNaZcqn8VTR10X27qHnKFdwoBI9qMSEHm0N878UiKRtM/s1600/cds3.jpg" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Having the actual band name instead of 'A', 'B', 'C' etc looks a million times better. BUT I had a really hard time getting over the lack of album covers for quite a few of the entries. And the backup was pretty easy, but not one-click easy like the HIM apps.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjur4tFlHIHqultZFrhRFVaI3PBOccpwF959WTYON6W0A1-pXb_p6qu99QeAVHXXjMKMGguZlwZ_piEUlSsDv370OWDczhGkNCTLujBwEhEx-IlSzWBpecqd-6uGndH4Q7f7a6Vi4lIgzHb/s1600/cds2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjur4tFlHIHqultZFrhRFVaI3PBOccpwF959WTYON6W0A1-pXb_p6qu99QeAVHXXjMKMGguZlwZ_piEUlSsDv370OWDczhGkNCTLujBwEhEx-IlSzWBpecqd-6uGndH4Q7f7a6Vi4lIgzHb/s1600/cds2.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The developers are pretty open to suggestion, so I emailed them regarding introducing an option to have the band name as the main title instead of the album name, and they said they'd look into it for the next update. It's not quite there yet, but with a few little changes in the future it could turn out to be pretty much the perfect CD inventory app.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">A few months ago I decided once and for all that World of Warcraft was not for me. I barely touched it in the months after Christmas, and despite getting back into it for a little while in April it seemed like a bit of a waste of money. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Around the same time I was contemplating kicking WoW to the curb, I heard about <a href="http://www.kiva.org/">Kiva</a>. From Oprah. Oprah told me about it. Specifically, the episode of Oprah's Favourite Things where she gave everyone a Kiva gift card told me about it. Essentially, you loan money to a small business owner in a developing country (usually, I've seen some USA loans) so they can start/expand their business, and then they pay you back. It's kind of nice knowing that giving as little as $25 can make such a huge difference towards someone's life. And it was a far more worthwhile thing to spend money on than battling internet dragons.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">Now, it's not very often that I talk about Serious Things on here, but I've had to take a bit of a detour on this particular issue (though essentially, it's still pretty nerdy, woo!). On the 9th of August Australians will take part in the Census, something that I didn't really give a shit about until I started watching <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Do_You_Think_You_Are%3F_%28British_TV_series%29">Who Do You Think You Are</a> and they were getting all this bitchin' info from the Census like 200 years ago.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Anyway, during the course of the Census exam paper we will be asked which religion we follow. In previous years people have put 'Jedi' or 'Jedi Knight' for the lulz. Specifically, around 55000 people put that as their answer in 2006. Instead of Jedi Knight being recorded as an actual religion, it is recorded as 'Not Defined', which is as good as being lumped under the greater 'religious' banner. By specifically putting 'No Religion' it will decrease the political impact these groups will have when it comes time to formulate new laws and policies for the entire country. 'Oh, gay marriage? Hm, seems we have a religious majority in this country, and they won't like that. DE-NY'.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">From <a href="http://censusnoreligion.org/">censusnoreligion.org</a>: </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><i>'The Atheist Foundation of Australia believes all government laws and policies should benefit all members of society, not just those who adhere to a particular religious faith - even when that religion holds a majority position. As such, all government decisions should be based on empirical evidence rather than religious beliefs.'</i><br />
<i> </i></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;">I have no issue with people who believe in God, it is absolutely their personal choice. But it is not my personal choice for my country to be run on guidelines set by some 'hokey religion'.<i> </i>So, if you have no particular allegiance to a faith, put 'No Religion', and leave the Jedi Knight stuff for when you're LARP-ing with your friends.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Ugh. LARP-ers.</div>Jacintahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02693089490090435345noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749144058687328743.post-36379479808381906402011-07-26T11:13:00.000+08:002011-07-26T11:13:55.765+08:00Barrowman. And Rainbows.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPwe39YRVitVeskdEElqrBiIEGwU0mOs7uROOSmyKBf6X9uVb8VnCh7ySEYZ8D8-avyghddnQZPfpYhsO6crooaguFb4TNxKumKQxqvyKX049_barA5C8mQLVxMpUHfV1B7EW5t6yyJjsK/s1600/outgayed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPwe39YRVitVeskdEElqrBiIEGwU0mOs7uROOSmyKBf6X9uVb8VnCh7ySEYZ8D8-avyghddnQZPfpYhsO6crooaguFb4TNxKumKQxqvyKX049_barA5C8mQLVxMpUHfV1B7EW5t6yyJjsK/s1600/outgayed.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One of the best things about having a blog is checking your stats occasionally to see what things people are searching for when they stumble upon your posts. Usually, they're pretty normal. This blog hasn't been going very long from its current location, so most of the hits have been from people searching 'cosplay' or 'James Marsters' or 'Sean Maher' etc. Reasonable. HOWEVER, the other day I logged into Wordpress where the blog had previously been hosted for ~3 years and found some wonderful gems. The most common? Variations on the theme of 'John Barrowman & rainbows'. Interesting. Pop below the cut for more nuggets of crazy.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><a name='more'></a>The most popular single phrase searched for on the blog is <b>'Davey Havok'</b>. I put up one photo of him two and a half years ago, and it seems to be the most popular thing on the entire blog. Sigh. But really, in the grand scheme of things, that's pretty normal. Check out some of the other things people have used to land on the blog:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><ul><li>wolf men gay</li>
<li>john barrowman in a dress</li>
<li>tommy wiseau cat</li>
<li>creepy stalker photo</li>
<li><b>a face made out of money</b></li>
<li>stalker fun</li>
<li>john barrowman is annoying</li>
<li>nerdy guy with his cat and lasers</li>
<li>boba fett as a child and in his child hood</li>
<li>john barrowman making out</li>
<li><b>spike buffy sex wall</b> </li>
<li>creepy money stalker</li>
<li>davey havok underwear</li>
<li>compare john barrowman and tom cruise</li>
<li>nerds get chucked in bins</li>
<li>neil patrick harris in boba fett armor</li>
<li>dog with straight face</li>
<li><b>which is more fitting for my life right now, nerds or blergh? </b></li>
<li>what is john barrowman attempting to do with david tennant?</li>
<li>fuck you all im from texas</li>
<li>wolverine kissing batman </li>
</ul><br />
So, going by that, I should really just make this blog all about stalking and John Barrowman. Or stalking John Barrowman. There are a million Barrowman-related things I didn't bother to post, also many stalk-y things. Strange. Though I really must commend the person who searched for 'neil patrick harris in boba fett armor'. You like good things. You can hang out here all you want.<br />
<br />
So I ask of you, dear reader, what is the most ridiculous thing someone had used to find YOUR blog? Best search term will get a prize. The prize is my sympathy. GO!<br />

But first, before I go any further:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqYhxmGUsp4HEEbQFhe8SO34Sjx4InDmT1BGin9kLszf-GO9ZTmUmwaCgk1fOPmnQevmT41QEbK1ikZcx0KQzEateNiBd3YzE4-0iGmHyc8IEv2MCPKt1j-tvSXSmrtfcB_RUHb5h-iqWl/s1600/jamesgarethkiss.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqYhxmGUsp4HEEbQFhe8SO34Sjx4InDmT1BGin9kLszf-GO9ZTmUmwaCgk1fOPmnQevmT41QEbK1ikZcx0KQzEateNiBd3YzE4-0iGmHyc8IEv2MCPKt1j-tvSXSmrtfcB_RUHb5h-iqWl/s1600/jamesgarethkiss.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div>Yep. Ok. Now, with that out of the way, pop below the cut to see my wrap-up of the celebrity-laden part of my Supanova experience.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The day started off relatively early (9.30am on a weekend is incredibly early for me, okay?), and luckily I was able to scam a stall-holders pass to get in to the convention before doors opened. WIN. As soon as the doors were open and it was all officially 'on', I was right at the front of the line to buy my autograph tokens. Last year the lines had been so mental I hadn't even considered bothering to get an autograph, and with the inclusion of Tom Felton it was only going to be worse. So, got in early, got everything sorted, and it was all good. They'd put the celebrities in an adjoining pavillion instead of cramming everything in to the one like last year, and it was a GOOD MOVE. Far less claustrophobic than last year.<br />
<br />
The celebs eventually got herded into their poor, demoralising cattle pens and started signing things, so I went along and joined James Marsters' line. Everyone in the line was pretty chill. No crying. I couldn't have handled crying. Had a good old chat to his 'handler' person while waiting for it to be my turn. Nice chap. Got my photo signed by James, and he is a truly lovely human being. I can only imagine how awkward these sort of things would be for the 'talent' sometimes, but he was very engaging and didn't just churn through the autographs. I barely had time to get all 'OMG it's SPIKE!' before he'd started up a conversation about Firefly (I was wearing a Browncoats shirt) and then Torchwood. Walked away thinking 'What a BRO!'.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicY0IikPVf-KtcgKm4tvGV8jfcWoO1JTvANj_ywKiNL9qdyDbWh9tJcVv9rrqCpNyIE5Yj9ogRYoetuuZXo-U3QxhlA8fXQ309GYkrsTba5gH_6BDu6j2w_nPJ_NvlSkL2sRFacKIplwIG/s1600/jamesmarstersauto.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicY0IikPVf-KtcgKm4tvGV8jfcWoO1JTvANj_ywKiNL9qdyDbWh9tJcVv9rrqCpNyIE5Yj9ogRYoetuuZXo-U3QxhlA8fXQ309GYkrsTba5gH_6BDu6j2w_nPJ_NvlSkL2sRFacKIplwIG/s1600/jamesmarstersauto.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">There was a selection of photos to choose from, and they were all pretty cheesy/bad, so this was the best of a bad bunch. Oh Buffy. So unashamedly 90s. Gels! Gels on all our flashes! Many coloured gels!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I thought it would probably be a good idea to get all the autographs out of the way early, as I had panels to attend and 'work' to do, so I went back over to my gear stash at the Monster & Robot Industries table, grabbed my Gareth David-Lloyd & Sean Maher photos and went to get them signed.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div>Now. I wouldn't really consider myself the type of person to really get star-struck (except that one time, but I was 10 and it was Harry Connick Jr, what was I SUPPOSED TO DO?), but I did not survive the GDL encounter as well as the Marsters one. He didn't have much of a line, so I went up thinking 'Ho ho ho, no one else waiting, I'll get to have a big ol' chat to Ianto, how nice'. He signed my photo, smiled and said 'Thanks sweetie'.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd-78f-IAE1sW4jRFG1RnHXgdjabB5V0YHcDeE_jY4vaBMfMbpk4KRSEF-c9kvwwd8xHmyTqCszhczZrC47MFht25lsIgCctb86o79eT2iv1t2fkmqVwRnNY5wGFhXDoGt9_5HXsAkO35-/s1600/squee.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd-78f-IAE1sW4jRFG1RnHXgdjabB5V0YHcDeE_jY4vaBMfMbpk4KRSEF-c9kvwwd8xHmyTqCszhczZrC47MFht25lsIgCctb86o79eT2iv1t2fkmqVwRnNY5wGFhXDoGt9_5HXsAkO35-/s1600/squee.png" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">SWEEEEETTTTIIIEEEEE. I like to think I didn't just grab the photo and run, but I really can't remember what happened after that. He was nice though. And he's kissed John Barrowman. Double nice.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH4XDtlEY9QULufMuivXRApUqzUDWRnKyxqfifFwX13BK0qEDrvj1i-HtsAt11ycDH0LxK0QRQz7yeeAQ8hiFg0kpXV76ohKdUGmuT4xmPC0TU1S-FMksetjlmM8nd9zsL1df4IYQAiuju/s1600/garethdavidlloydauto.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiH4XDtlEY9QULufMuivXRApUqzUDWRnKyxqfifFwX13BK0qEDrvj1i-HtsAt11ycDH0LxK0QRQz7yeeAQ8hiFg0kpXV76ohKdUGmuT4xmPC0TU1S-FMksetjlmM8nd9zsL1df4IYQAiuju/s1600/garethdavidlloydauto.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">He had a slightly better selection of photos, though not that many as 'Ianto'. Just 'Gareth' photos. Which is fine, but I like character shots. Possibly just me. Well, actually it clearly was just me, I went back the next day to get a photo signed for Krys, and all the 'Gareths' were gone!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Went over to Sean Maher's table, got my photo signed, he said 'Oh Jacinta, that's such a pretty name' and I was like 'THANKS SEAN MAHER, THAT'S NICE OF YOU I JUST MET GARETH DAVID-LLOYD HE'S SO GREAT'. Heh. Poor Sean Maher. It probably could have been Nathan Fillion sitting at that table and I still would have been like 'HI NATHAN FILLION. HOW GREAT IS GARETH DAVID-LLOYD?'</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbNMgMlYlCx2JxZlJxiTx1v_lHO4IOexQBQpzwuUgJmTlho4j2ZZ8YElkXj2AGGGzH7QdJG_pxDll0oFonBCUKbEZf4rJFI_P6t3vjRQnKXtyr42PnG3g-C_u_GkA10Wb550gRYOOU3Na9/s1600/seanmaherauto.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbNMgMlYlCx2JxZlJxiTx1v_lHO4IOexQBQpzwuUgJmTlho4j2ZZ8YElkXj2AGGGzH7QdJG_pxDll0oFonBCUKbEZf4rJFI_P6t3vjRQnKXtyr42PnG3g-C_u_GkA10Wb550gRYOOU3Na9/s1600/seanmaherauto.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Sean Maher had the best photo selection out of eeeeveryone. As Simon, looking super dapper. As Sean, looking super hot. It was win/win/win all round. I obviously had to choose a Simon. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">After that, I did some 'work' for a while, then it was time for the panels. Sean's was first, and I have nothing to report, as he spoke so softly that no one could hear his answers to any of the questions. You could just tell everyone wanted to get up and say 'Tell us awesome stories about how funny and godlike Nathan Fillion is!' but they didn't. Oh, one person sort of did. But then I couldn't hear his answer anyway. I didn't bring my big lens on the first day, so I didn't take any photos at the panels which I regret quite a lot. In previous years if you wanted to attend panels that were one after the other you could just stay in the theatre, but this year they were kicking everyone out and then letting people back in. That was a BIT annoying, as GDL's panel was after Sean's, and after we left, and then re-lined up, and then got back in, we were further back than we were initially. Grrr. Gareth's panel was quite funny. He had rewards for good questions, and threatened to take belongings off people who asked crap questions. I probably should have taken notes, it was like a month ago now, and I can't remember any of the questions. But he was good, and gave a good amount of time to each question.There are some videos on YouTube, but the sound isn't great.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">That night was the 'James Marsters In Concert' experience, which truthfully we only bought tickets to for the lulz. No photos from that either, cause as the threatening voiceover said before the show we weren't allowed to take photos or video as the performance was a private moment between us and James. Or something. They actually had people walking up and down the aisles making sure people weren't filming on the sly. Hardcore. Thankfully, other people have TOTALLY bootlegged his shows!</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/fxugh9k2vJw?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">So, as you can see (hear), he wasn't really as bad as we thought. Can sing ok, can play the guitar ok, is a bit ordinary at the whole 'writing lyrics' thing, but hey. He tries. And no one would get anywhere if they didn't try. *cough* Anyway. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The biggest reaction of the night was when he closed the show with the song above. He intro'd it as being about Michelle Trachtenberg (aka Buffy's little sister), and we all thought 'Aw, that's nice. How nice'. By the end of the song we'd all squirmed so much we'd just about fallen off our seats. Have a listen again, or check out the lyrics <a href="http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/118915/">here</a>. She was ~16 when they were on the show together, and he was ~40. Each to their own and everything, but....DUDE.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The next day I was back slightly less bright and early, but still in time for James' panel. This time I DID bring my big lens. Hurrah for me! I had a purple wristband with MEDIA written on it in silver texta (very official) so I was allowed down the front for happy snaps. I stayed for the whole panel, and it was a far nicer vantage point than being halfway back in the room. Again, I remember very little from the panel, but someone put up a video of most of it on the YouTubes:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/vwGulWL5sQc?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The lighting is always pretty iffy in these sorts of things, but thankfully the lights were far better than when I tried to take photos of Karl Urban at the 2009 Supanova, so the shots turned out ok.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDC_u__P3OGKCayrZiDiW3MlFcjmgH4yughaMrjz3uQjvIcMRsSOYTjTl0JV1onNcqmI3Z7dZqhjRRa31G-1SAk8AHOTnrtNlZDiE5ift8GNoeQ5FgM4SvTl3Mo4IdHEGxlte3he-X2kqf/s1600/jamesmarsters01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDC_u__P3OGKCayrZiDiW3MlFcjmgH4yughaMrjz3uQjvIcMRsSOYTjTl0JV1onNcqmI3Z7dZqhjRRa31G-1SAk8AHOTnrtNlZDiE5ift8GNoeQ5FgM4SvTl3Mo4IdHEGxlte3he-X2kqf/s1600/jamesmarsters01.jpg" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">My next port of call was Screamocalypse 2011 aka the Tom Felton panel. Despite not really being into Harry Potter, I am a big fan of Tom Felton after that weekend. He was so wonderfully gracious with his time and his answers, and he seems like such a genuinely level-headed young man. Admittedly, I didn't stay for the whole panel. There was a lot of screaming initially, and after someone asked a question he'd say 'Thanks lovely' and the entire audience would go 'AWWWWWWWW' in unison. Multiple times. It got a bit much. But once again, there are videos up on YouTube, which makes for convenient viewing MINUS the eardrum-tearing screams.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">So, after a big day of photo-ing and shopping and etc etc, it was time to head off to the After Party. It was being held at a local pub, and wasn't ALL of the guests, just James Marsters & Gareth David-Lloyd. All good as far as I was concerned. We thought it would be a fun night of drinking and hanging out and funtimes.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Sigh.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">We arrived a little after 7 thinking 'Oh crap, we're gonna be late!' The organisers were yet to turn up, so we all milled in the front bar for about 40 minutes waiting for them. Eventually they turned up, we were given a couple of drinks tickets, but by that point I'd had a couple of ciders while waiting, so had to be on the softies for the rest of the night. Boo. Was quite a while before the celebs turned up, in the meantime we were given finger food to snack on while we were waiting. The food wasn't that great, but I assume the kitchen probably had it ready to go for when the party was SUPPOSED to start, not an hour later, so I don't blame them for the tepid chicken mini-drumsticks. There was a Justin Timberlake dvd playing on the pub tv which we watched until the chaps turned up an indiscriminate amount of time later. James came over to our table first, and we had quite a good little chat about various things but once he was led away to another group by the Supanova hosts, we checked our watches and realised he'd been at our table for five minutes. We weren't overly stoked, but sort of shrugged it off. Gareth did the opposite circuit of the room, so came to our table as one of the last for the evening. We'd been waiting (and rewatching the Justin Timberlake dvd that was replaying) for over an hour for him, so when he came over it was like 'Thank GOD'. That was fairly short-lived, as he put his drink down and excused himself to go to the toilet. He had clearly been sampling MANY of the fine ales available at the pub, so he was fairly drunk by the time he got around to us, which we thought would result in a very funny conversation. It did! He was hilarious, and although I can't repeat most of what he said, it was probably one of the highlights of the weekend.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Sadly, it went for four minutes.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Essentially, we paid $150 to get two free drinks, watch a Justin Timberlake dvd and talk to some celebrities for ~10 minutes. There were just too many people there for everyone to get a decent equal amount of time. If there had been less tickets sold, a better punter to celeb ratio, and the thing hadn't started later than it should have, then it probably would have been ok, but it turned out to be poor value for money. I wasn't really keen on the party as just an opportunity to LOOK at them, I could have done that easily with the autograph and photo ops over the weekend. I went because I enjoyed their work, thought they were interesting, and wanted to interact with them away from the convention environment. Essentially I could have spent four minutes talking to Gareth at the signing desk, it would have been pretty much the same and far less expensive. Unless I knew things had been improved, I probably wouldn't waste money on one of these events again. I know other convention companies in Australia offer significantly more for the same price (sit-down meal, access to the celebrities for HOURS), otherwise I may have perhaps just shrugged the whole thing off as 'Well, I guess that's how these sorts of things are run'. I've heard since that the identical event in Sydney was even worse, and they didn't even get free drinks to deal with the pain. Egads.<br />
<br />
So while that was a bit of a downer to end the weekend, overall it was probably my favourite Supanova in terms of guests. Obviously they can't cater to everyone all the time, but this year there were a lot of guests I was interested in, so I had a lot of fun. Looking forward to next year already.</div>Jacintahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02693089490090435345noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749144058687328743.post-37063599029199248972011-07-11T14:13:00.000+08:002011-07-11T14:13:31.434+08:00Supanova 2011: Artists Alley<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_vSijwzhgQBE6DEIcQFD6e5SvwtvpcI9dKQvRRfpkc-SFQjBTlaE0oVWpmp2XltPmw2KvTVpeIj-KvdhU_GHbeO1AgIwiFG2tT0WKTKpEg2RFAxqE9ipfeY3m18LiX2XpnUHXWfa8dgnL/s1600/lovepuppets.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_vSijwzhgQBE6DEIcQFD6e5SvwtvpcI9dKQvRRfpkc-SFQjBTlaE0oVWpmp2XltPmw2KvTVpeIj-KvdhU_GHbeO1AgIwiFG2tT0WKTKpEg2RFAxqE9ipfeY3m18LiX2XpnUHXWfa8dgnL/s1600/lovepuppets.jpg" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Artists Alley is the place at Supanova to discover both established and indie comic artists, as well as artists who create works based on cult pop culture themes. The comics above are from chums who occupied the <a href="http://sites.google.com/site/monsterandrobotindustries/">Monster & Robot Industries</a> stall. Pop below the cut to see more of their work, and some of my other favourites from the weekend.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIKYEdyMgdm730uobrtBHsblCZ2HXEqRQ1A_mZtkAPLLejVXGI2pOSfpYQX4tDuDoPWbCYsG2I38RBV6vxI5O2hiYln9FkvioQvr52ozKV6hzCWJMZIihiZ4jz3ENNhfKF6uzXGXvasVmc/s1600/sexydanford.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIKYEdyMgdm730uobrtBHsblCZ2HXEqRQ1A_mZtkAPLLejVXGI2pOSfpYQX4tDuDoPWbCYsG2I38RBV6vxI5O2hiYln9FkvioQvr52ozKV6hzCWJMZIihiZ4jz3ENNhfKF6uzXGXvasVmc/s1600/sexydanford.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The stall featured comics from Grug, Jess and Luke, including Jess's newest creation <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/72320910/danford-minicomic">Danford</a>, and the Grug/Luke collaboration <a href="http://www.gloriousbounty.com/">'Glorious Bounty'</a>. Jess's super-cute books gave parents a break from having to shield their kids from guns and boobs and whatever weird stuff happens in anime comics. I can personally vouch for the lols from the Glorious Bounty series, but sadly this year I forgot to grab any of the other comics. LUCKILY, they're all available on etsy, which is where I'll be grabbing them from, and you should too. Visit <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/tinymonster">Made By Bees</a> on Etsy for a selection of comics (and badges!).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJHoKyloYZ4TLg0U9YcOtoxeiad7cZfMiQP_vR2JVA9Ola8HQzk4l9vmYPSqB-noMJdYWJnS-xMdpYoHAY37yGJg8mnUFB1PHJVrQNwep2zIf9rsRgdH0FVLoVUZMjTyPBaE3ZxsaRRhDo/s1600/danford.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Next is a stall that grabbed my attention like no other. First it was the colourful, shiny Doctor Who prints that adorned the back wall of the stall, then it was the utterly stunning Supernatural paintings. The one above had sold out by the time by the time I got around to the stall, which is totally understandable. LOOK AT IT! It was so jawdropping in person. The folks at <a href="http://store.brucelovesyou.com/">Bruce Loves You</a> had a wonderful stall full of Supernatural, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Watchmen and more. I posted a photo of the 'Stetsons are Cool' button I bought in a previous post, but the full range of Doctor Who designs are well worth a look.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTJnrK6_YsKzOpntbnXnF4JIE-JnHPiKyB_KKuzrSRLFOVoHwLDsAqKJ-BIH58NnuHl4fb1L-Li4sBZaP1Gh-slirifBbMIVxbYLyEhEdJGsyRmjeaaTAWlmY4t5N9ib5N7JOebX1N0MW_/s1600/brucelovesyou03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTJnrK6_YsKzOpntbnXnF4JIE-JnHPiKyB_KKuzrSRLFOVoHwLDsAqKJ-BIH58NnuHl4fb1L-Li4sBZaP1Gh-slirifBbMIVxbYLyEhEdJGsyRmjeaaTAWlmY4t5N9ib5N7JOebX1N0MW_/s400/brucelovesyou03.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">They were so colourful and cute, I would have bought them all if I didn't already have a pile of unframed prints waiting to be hung at home. I flipped through the folio of minimalist representations of Supernatural episodes, and one made me go 'Oh, wow....'. Again, I didn't buy because of wall space restrictions, but I grabbed a business card to check the online store out later. I don't know if all the business cards had the same image on the back, or if I was just extremely lucky in picking it up, but I grabbed one with my favourite image on it:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDFT1sMTa7P40hSiMBuIa3fsNYgl-wR-dC9vFe8thd4qC9rhqMwhAQMuLC7gCzEYEYkQx0kvGz0RUlTf7Viu_viNIXhDvy_HBPIBuaTfPw721D4Dgr9FwW70pn_3V-kGzuKbr954dgS4B5/s1600/brucelovesyou01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDFT1sMTa7P40hSiMBuIa3fsNYgl-wR-dC9vFe8thd4qC9rhqMwhAQMuLC7gCzEYEYkQx0kvGz0RUlTf7Viu_viNIXhDvy_HBPIBuaTfPw721D4Dgr9FwW70pn_3V-kGzuKbr954dgS4B5/s1600/brucelovesyou01.jpg" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">That image will mean absolutely nothing to someone who hasn't seen the episode, but if you HAVE, it's like 'Aaaaaaarrrggghhh!' (in a good way). I forget big chunks of Supernatural in between viewings, but Sammy in that white suit will be burnt into my brain forever. 'The End' will be the first one I pick up when I get around to doing an order for sure. This month they have a 10% off sale, using the code SUPANOVA at checkout, so please please please <a href="http://store.brucelovesyou.com/">check them out</a>.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEMUZoZ9cKPSiEoVtkaaHpOgaP3OAqGGrf1myadLLUs1ez2kp76B3YUCped8Gde9qEhy6qwF6aWeBogRhMQF0JhzvFbcK1rqIuQJRo98lhrJ9tTePGanu06iOmw8uNODLeXwFt54mdlkRu/s1600/stewartmckennybountyhunters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEMUZoZ9cKPSiEoVtkaaHpOgaP3OAqGGrf1myadLLUs1ez2kp76B3YUCped8Gde9qEhy6qwF6aWeBogRhMQF0JhzvFbcK1rqIuQJRo98lhrJ9tTePGanu06iOmw8uNODLeXwFt54mdlkRu/s1600/stewartmckennybountyhunters.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Last but certainly not least is <a href="http://www.stewartmckenny.com/">Stewart McKenny</a>. Trying to pick a favourite image of his to display was incredibly hard, I own several, and I genuinely love so many of them. I don't own this one of the Star Wars bounty hunter lineup (yet), but it is one of my front-running favourites for sure. I flipped though the folder of Stewart's original sketches, and just couldn't go past this one:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpxtbmG-aSXlbtHUm9Ww_Um4VsY1Vd1I1FBGGpRFuJtJJJhcj0lQ4BppTgvHftqCLJMR3nq3Zbbq7lRiNSKNS75sFclIT7IVIIuhLtWCQTUf3lxFjWeOozy17V6utgmvJwrsL_-tkbzlUX/s1600/stewartmckennyphantom01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpxtbmG-aSXlbtHUm9Ww_Um4VsY1Vd1I1FBGGpRFuJtJJJhcj0lQ4BppTgvHftqCLJMR3nq3Zbbq7lRiNSKNS75sFclIT7IVIIuhLtWCQTUf3lxFjWeOozy17V6utgmvJwrsL_-tkbzlUX/s1600/stewartmckennyphantom01.jpg" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My grandad was a massive Phantom fan and growing up I'd been used to the constant presence of Phantom comics and memorabilia in the house. Since he passed away there has been very little of The Ghost Who Walks in my life, so I grabbed this one without much hesitation. Then the next day I came back and grabbed this: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7dlfkZWQkWeE74wV4KdUF6jX2l4sJuVAknEE73KtXfKlazPq7NtgCuDTT34yRJbONt29mZ7g3Yz3lsipOpz1XkUttctI7nSvcafYz1pyEEjf_OsEd87JCksZcXMCRMR6cXRWGtHJPydZS/s1600/stewartmckennyphantom02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7dlfkZWQkWeE74wV4KdUF6jX2l4sJuVAknEE73KtXfKlazPq7NtgCuDTT34yRJbONt29mZ7g3Yz3lsipOpz1XkUttctI7nSvcafYz1pyEEjf_OsEd87JCksZcXMCRMR6cXRWGtHJPydZS/s1600/stewartmckennyphantom02.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The coloured sketch and pencil sketch will look great framed up together, and it will be very nice to have a Phantom piece on the walls once again. The best way to check out Stewart's stuff is to add him as a friend on Facebook, or become a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Stewart-McKenny/25285888369">fan of his page</a>. His galleries of sketches are far more extensive, and the newer stuff is put up there first. His latest addition is a Princess Bride poster that is just...guh. So good. And he's a truly lovely guy. Absolute champ.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I hope you enjoyed a stroll through my favourite parts of the Artists Alley at Supanova. Firstly:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVSun6pxEjK9RkT3el_zJqjyCUZkibNP4VjG9YLQTGZ6mGeMTYnA2Ic4CHvR2sRA8xLy8cOrFf1_CIxj71wNC1EXtOeGuCnoNrlFlfdUtDutcYWx_-jKvLuLANHOVfttvwNCV9XA_JM27x/s1600/sherlock.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVSun6pxEjK9RkT3el_zJqjyCUZkibNP4VjG9YLQTGZ6mGeMTYnA2Ic4CHvR2sRA8xLy8cOrFf1_CIxj71wNC1EXtOeGuCnoNrlFlfdUtDutcYWx_-jKvLuLANHOVfttvwNCV9XA_JM27x/s1600/sherlock.jpg" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">HNNNG! The first movie was so good that I pretty much have no words for how much I'm looking forward to the sequel. Since Iron Man 2 and Transformers 2 I've been a bit wary at getting excited over sequels, but this can't POSSIBLY stink as much as they did, so it's all good (I am however prepared to eat my words in 6 months time)! It's released in the USA on the 16th of December, but we're not getting it in Australia until the 5th of January. Boooooo! At this stage I wouldn't expect I'd be desperate enough to torrent it, but we'll see how well my resolve stands up in December.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0Ah0Vu57VznIpw6Y1iUsQBsbiWimxchq7LL0_hhITu51Sf4GDvolSKKtf82k33Z9ahySyphga5O7GRT7NcD0Y_pTSSZfm001pb6-Llt_1c-MS7GbiV-1YZDM9z_9FKcsjMShi_nH1WoTn/s1600/tennantfrightnight.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0Ah0Vu57VznIpw6Y1iUsQBsbiWimxchq7LL0_hhITu51Sf4GDvolSKKtf82k33Z9ahySyphga5O7GRT7NcD0Y_pTSSZfm001pb6-Llt_1c-MS7GbiV-1YZDM9z_9FKcsjMShi_nH1WoTn/s1600/tennantfrightnight.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">David Tennant as an eyeliner-wearing vampire hunter with a shotgun. HNNNG. Delightfully, we get this BEFORE the USA, on the 18th of August (they get it on the 19th, but whatever, small victories). You know what, I don't even really know what this is about, apart from him hunting vampires, and Colin Farrell being a vampire. That's all I need tbh. I always thought 'Fright Night' was a fairly campy name, so I was surprised when the movie seemed quite dark in the trailer. I know it's a remake, but still. Camp.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/hMjGnSIPSpU?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">THIS. Oh my word. This looks so wonderfully terrible. When I first saw this was coming out, and I read the cast list, I was pretty excited. Orlando Bloom! The guy who played Mr Darcy in the new Pride & Prejudice! The kid who played Percy Jackson! The dude from Inglourious Basterds! Then I saw this trailer. My dreams of Orlando being a shit-hot Musketeer were dashed. My dreams of D'Artagnan not being a total twerp were dashed. HOWEVER. Buckingham has the most badass hair I have seen in a long time. And there's flying ships with cannons. And flamethrowers! And Milla Jovovich doing a whole lot of that slo-mo fighting thing that seems to be her forte. And D'Artagnan almost being stabbed in the face. This cannot possibly be as shit as Pirates of the Caribbean 4, so I am holding high (okay, slightly above average) hopes for this one. It comes out in Australia on October 13, and I plan on seeing it opening weekend before everybody else goes first and tells me it's shit and breaks my heart.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One of the things I most look forward to every year is seeing what characters people choose to come along dressed up as. Most people aren't particularly hardcore about wanting to entering the cosplay competition, so there's some hilariously DIY concoctions to go along with all the jaw-droppers which are clearly the result of a lot of money and effort. Most of the really fancy ones tend to be anime or video game characters that I know nothing about, so the ones that get me excited are the more 'conventional' and creative ones, like last year's kick-ass Batman, and these guys dressed up as the crew from Misfits. Overall I'd say the cosplay probably wasn't as plentiful as last year. After seeing some photos from the east coast Supanovas, Perth has to pick up its game! There were some really cool ones though, so head below the cut for a few snaps from both days.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<br />
One thing the paper DOESN'T give a rat's ass about is photos of my phat lootz!<br />
<br />

PHHAAAAAT. I didn't buy as much crap as last year, though I probably spent a similar amount of money due to all the autographs I got. Head under the cut to check out how I mis-spent all my money!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>There were two things I had on my shopping list for Supanova: the remaining Civil War comics I needed to complete my collection, and the Arkham Asylum Batman from the Black & White line. Sadly, the only Civil War comics I saw floating around were ones I already had, but I DID manage to find my Batman with the lovely chaps at the <a href="http://sites.google.com/site/comiczoneperth/">Comic Zone</a> stall.<br />
<br />

Truly glorious. To be perfectly honest, I can count the hours I've spent playing Arkham Asylum on one hand, but I so loved the design of the game version that as soon as this statue was announced I knew I had to have it. I also knew I didn't want to pay silly internet fanboy prices for it, so I waited, and got it for under $100 at the Con.<br />

If you've played Arkham, you already know how bad-ass Batman looks in it, and this statue does him a hell of a lot of justice. Lethal-looking gauntlets, batarang at the ready, heavy duty boots ready for skull-stomping. The thing I really liked about this one was that it comes fixed to the base. Some of the B&W line have pegs and you position the figure on the base yourself, but that makes me a little nervous when I'm moving or cleaning them. I like my statues solid.<br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">So yes, happy with my purchase. My Jim Lee Joker has given up prime real estate on my bedroom bookcase to make way for this guy, but really, he was on borrowed time anyway. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Next up, Mr LeBeau (aka the Marvel Select Gambit)</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC6D5y7-VJgJ_AYenObQQ601CSxZyNSR3AxZYk9xl7ajDTEt7KTCUh2rdxaGrLZz6_h1Sior6O-xDUSGyBbex9nbqBypeskqMY3torVx6-9HTR_DPwW7mAGYHacNO2cT-0bcXinmOStYkf/s1600/gambit01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC6D5y7-VJgJ_AYenObQQ601CSxZyNSR3AxZYk9xl7ajDTEt7KTCUh2rdxaGrLZz6_h1Sior6O-xDUSGyBbex9nbqBypeskqMY3torVx6-9HTR_DPwW7mAGYHacNO2cT-0bcXinmOStYkf/s1600/gambit01.jpg" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I bought Gambit (and the next Marvel Select) from the <a href="http://www.qualitycomics.com.au/">Quality Comics</a> stall. I was a bit wary of how much I was likely to spend on the weekend, so I got Keith to pop them aside on the Saturday, so I could come back and get them on the Sunday. Thanks Keith! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I like Gambit a lot. I do. Always have. But I'm not greatly enamoured with this one. The background it came with was so bad that I'm not even going to post a photo of it (though you can see it <a href="http://marvel.com/images/gallery/story/15916/diamond_presents_the_marvel_select_gambit_action_figure/image/871157">here</a>). His big flowy coat makes it awkward to get him into cool positions, cause you have to have him leaning forward a little to counter the weight. He comes with two alternate hands and a couple of big swooshy card-throwing thingys, but I'll be displaying him nice and simple, like above. His staff sits in his hand a little bit awkwardly, but it's ok.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">My 'meh'-ness towards Gambit may have been due to how FACE CRUSHINGLY AWESOME the other Marvel Select figure I bought was.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB_bQs3tBrKAUqciJkfN0aKKVdeMX2CHTlgFXmXRvey0u_jUglVuJ7CJr6k0Bn4E-iHxKl3yCRpe0Zj-iZmumTCNutjJQHaEh7IuN4N4aIiNFZ5E9XUI4ccWgF2fazZ11F5SoW5NXO63-E/s1600/deadpool01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB_bQs3tBrKAUqciJkfN0aKKVdeMX2CHTlgFXmXRvey0u_jUglVuJ7CJr6k0Bn4E-iHxKl3yCRpe0Zj-iZmumTCNutjJQHaEh7IuN4N4aIiNFZ5E9XUI4ccWgF2fazZ11F5SoW5NXO63-E/s1600/deadpool01.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Awwwww, shiiiit yeah. Deadpool (being Deadpool), comes with about ten thousand weapons strapped to himself. He comes boxed holding sai, there are guns in his holsters, a machine gun, and there are also two katana ready to be slotted into their holders on his back. There may also be a knife strapped to his leg.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhormtHEZnL1UQoOM81jMVb2R7flu-40A11kxi8eNXtjwU2RoB0w1rlR1EVOKWrUWq-qRe0aym3M8CYrmz8weV6yO68EHa65HBuzxMyQPeXIt00N_HBmUCXUyVBz5EEW0ZE7ZUB4uuT9_Xz/s1600/deadpool03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhormtHEZnL1UQoOM81jMVb2R7flu-40A11kxi8eNXtjwU2RoB0w1rlR1EVOKWrUWq-qRe0aym3M8CYrmz8weV6yO68EHa65HBuzxMyQPeXIt00N_HBmUCXUyVBz5EEW0ZE7ZUB4uuT9_Xz/s1600/deadpool03.jpg" /></a> </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">The sai were pretty cool, but the figure's hands are designed so he's able to hold the gun properly and have his finger on the trigger. There's no question that I'll be displaying him with his guns. The only (very minor) disappointment with this one was that he wasn't quite articulated enough to do any REALLY cool Deadpool poses. I would have loved to have posed him pointing the gun at his own head. But it's only a tiny gripe.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Unlike the 'WTF is that supposed to be' Gambit base, the Deadpool base is brilliant. A crumbling wall behind, and a floor littered with shells.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

He does have a peg for one foot (something Gambit didn't have at all), and the other sits in a gap in the shells. He is still a little bit wonky, but not too bad.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: left;">There were variants for both figures, and while I did have to have a bit of a think about the Gambit one (longer hair), the Deadpool variant was Wade without his mask on and...no thanks. While I do like Deadpool as a character, I think the thing I like best about him is his costume design. If I'm going to display a figure, it's going to be with the kickass mask, not his fugly mangled head.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I'll admit I haven't worn a badge in YEARS, but I just couldn't pass this up. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.empiretoys.com.au/">Empire Toys</a> had a Buy-2-Get-1-Free deal going on their hardback comics, and I found a few gems in the boxes. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I really only picked up 'Eternals' because it was 'a Gaiman' (a phrase I found myself saying later. 'Oh, I bought a Gaiman'. WANNNNKKKERRRR), but reading the back I discovered not only was it 'a Gaiman', it was one that was set in the Marvel Civil War timeline. HOLY SHIT! I haven't read it yet, but I had a quick flick through and saw Iron Man was in it, and that's good enough for me. I grabbed one for myself and for a friend, so the lesser-priced 'Marvel Westerns' ended up being my freebie. Again, haven't read it, only flicked, but it looks pretty cool. Several short stories, some with modern art and some with more of the vintage pulp-style art. The stall didn't have EFTPOS, so I got them to hold the comics for me while I ran outside to get some cash. When I got back the girl handed me four comics, and I was like 'Errrr, nah, I only had three on hold' and she said 'The Iron Man is a freebie'. YAY. Again, haven't read, and haven't even really flicked, but hey. It's free and it's Iron Man. Can't really lose.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">So that's pretty much it for the Lootz section of Supanova. I did buy a couple of sketches, but I'll cover them in what I think I will call the 'Artist's Alley' section. Til next time!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

It's quite impressive how the country has embraced it over the last few years, within four years it's gone from being a bit too uncool for the general populace to a hugely popular and busy event.<br />
<br />
Last year I didn't have much interest in the 'Supa-Star' guests, so spent most of my time shopping and taking photos of the cosplayers, but this year the lineup is awesome. Of particular interest to me are Sean Maher (Simon Tamm From Firefly), Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto from Torchwood) and James Marsters (Spike from Buffy). Cary Elwes and Luke Perry were on the original lineup, but when they had to pull out they were replaced by Tom Felton from Harry Potter. I'm hoping the Felts-hysteria takes some of the heat off the others, I do want autographs, but I'm not massively excited about the thought of lining up for an hour for them. There was like a ten minute line for Karl Urban two years ago, and that was well enough for me. Though Karl was super. I liked him a lot.<br />
<br />
Anyway, because I'll be spending quite a bit of my time lining up for stuff and attending 'seminars' (horribly awkward Q&A sessions with the talent), I doubt I'll be taking as many photos as previous years. Will probably take my smaller camera in case of photo-emergency, but I won't be going out of my way.<br />
Just in case I am a bit slack in the photo department, here are a few I was too lazy to post after last year's Supanova.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-218" height="400" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/supanova01.jpg" title="supanova01" width="600" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-219" height="400" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/supanova05.jpg" title="supanova05" width="600" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-220" height="400" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/supanova06.jpg" title="supanova06" width="600" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-221" height="400" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/supanova08.jpg" title="supanova08" width="600" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-222" height="400" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/supanova10.jpg" title="supanova10" width="600" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-223" height="400" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/supanova11.jpg" title="supanova11" width="600" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-224" height="400" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/supanova12.jpg" title="supanova12" width="600" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-225" height="400" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/supanova13.jpg" title="supanova13" width="600" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-226" height="400" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/supanova16.jpg" title="supanova16" width="600" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-227" height="400" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/supanova18.jpg" title="supanova18" width="600" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-228" height="600" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/supanova19.jpg" title="supanova19" width="400" /></div><div style="text-align: left;">My main goal for this Supanova was to not spend anywhere near the obscene amount of money I spent on (really awesome) stuff last year, but given it will cost me over $100 just for the autographs (collectively, not individually), I may have to be realistic about how much I'll really be restricting myself. James Masters is doing a concert on the Saturday night, and the novelty factor will be high, so I already have a ticket to that. Also bought a ticket to the Supanova After Party on the Sunday night which essentially involves hanging out with James Marsters & Gareth David-Lloyd. That ticket was a wee bit expensive, but how often will that opportunity present itself? Hopefully there will be free drinks. I'd expect free drinks for the price.<br />

If I'm 100% honest I wasn't overly happy about it, but y'know. These things happen.<br />
<br />
The gallery of the finalists is available to view at <a href="http://www.museum.wa.gov.au/explore/galleries/kiss-my-camera-2011-finalists">http://www.museum.wa.gov.au/explore/galleries/kiss-my-camera-2011-finalists</a>. Jordan Shields won the Grand Prize with his portrait of Drapht, which was well deserved.<br />

I buy a lot of dumb shit all the time, but never before have I been quite so compelled to share the ridiculousness.<br />
<br />
So, yesterday I was at Priceline, and I would go so far to say that I blame <a href="http://donttheyknowwhoiam.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Suzanne</a> for the fact I was there in the first place. Her blog has opened up my eyes to the shiny appeal of the world of cosmetics, and Priceline is the primo place to go for said things. So yes. All Suzanne's fault.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I was in Priceline, walking past the perfume cabinets, and I saw this staring at me from the bottom shelf:<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-191" height="326" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/westlife1.jpg" title="westlife" width="490" /></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">What. On. Earth.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Anyone who knows me well will know I have a 'slight affection' for boybands of the 90s, and Westlife are no exception. I liked them back when they were called Westside. Yeah! Look at me being all pop elitist! Yeah! Anyway, I saw this thing (whatever it was, I didn't even really look at it properly to be honest) was $12, so promptly tucked it under my arm and headed for the counter.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">At home I opened it up. First the removal of the LUXURIOUS PLASTIC SLIPCASE:</div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-192" height="326" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/westlife2.jpg" title="westlife" width="490" /></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Roses and a bit of a crap font. Nice! Time to pop the box open and see what treasures are inside:</div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-193" height="499" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/westlife3.jpg" title="westlife" width="333" /></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Faux velvet, more roses, more crap font! I found an 'Eau De Parfum', a body lotion and a shower gel. Interesting. Upon spritzing some of the odour on my wrist (I'm having a hard time conceding and calling it a 'fragrance' at this point) it was clear it was aimed at three groups of potential buyers.</div><br />
<br />
<ul><li>The Elderly, who would be happy with just about anything as long as it covered up the stench of Death.</li>
<li>Little Girls, who just don't know any better.</li>
<li>Twenty-Somethings, buying it for The Lulz.</li>
</ul><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-194" height="326" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/westlife4.jpg" title="westlife" width="490" /></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">I'll admit, when I first smelt it I thought 'Oh, it's not THAT bad!' It was quite dense, and tended to hang over you like a foggy cloud of odour as opposed to a subtle perfume, but I guess that's value for money? EVERYONE EVERWHERE WILL SMELL YOU! *shrug* The best way to describe it would be 'mature' (like the stinky perfumed talc that old people got from Avon about 20 years ago) but with a sickly sweet after-smell. Quite strange. Smelt the body lotion and the shower gel, they seemed similar, but much milder and a little sweeter.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-195" height="326" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/westlife5.jpg" title="westlife" width="490" /></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Despite being something that I'd never wear myself, I did assume the perfume to be 'okay'. That is, until 4 hours later when I was headachey and nauseous and no amount of washing of my arm could remove the choking fog from my body. I'm wearing the jacket I was wearing last night and I CAN STILL SMELL IT. This is some potent crap. I'm far too terrified to use any of the other products now.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Sadly (or perhaps not), the Westlife fragrance set is destined to never again be worn by a human person, and will live out its days on a shelf in my bathroom. Cause it might smell like shit, but it sure does look nice!</div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-196" height="326" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/westlife6.jpg" title="westlife" width="490" /></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-197" height="326" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/westlife7.jpg" title="westlife" width="490" /></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-199" height="326" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/westlife9.jpg" title="westlife" width="490" /></div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-198" height="326" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/westlife8.jpg" title="westlife" width="490" /><br />
"<i>Why the fuck did I agree to this shiiiiiit?"</i></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">I give the Westlife fragrance set 1 Schnicky out of a possible 10.</div>Jacintahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02693089490090435345noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749144058687328743.post-13382988612827694422011-03-28T05:51:00.003+08:002011-06-28T12:14:43.082+08:00I'm the Juggernaut, bitch!<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/juggernauts.jpg"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-102" height="233" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/juggernauts.jpg" title="juggernauts" width="218" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
Oh yes friends, it's that time of year again! Another six months agonising over the health and form of 20-odd young men from across the country. AFL season is back, so that means one thing: DREAM TEAM, BABY!<br />
<br />
Now, this is my second year, and I made a lot of rookie errors the first time round, but I've learnt from those mistakes and am off to a pretty good start. I only cracked a score of 2000 once over the entire of last season, but I started off 2011 with a bang, scoring 2054. I'm stoked!<br />
<br />
Go under the cut to check out my squad of super maxi legends.</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: left;"><b>BACKS</b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/dtbacks1.jpg"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-180" height="139" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/dtbacks1.jpg" title="dtbacks" width="490" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
I did skimp on my backs a bit this year, preferring to load up my other positions, but now that the weekend's over, I'm not really regretting my choices. Astbury didn't live up to his scores in the NAB Cup, and Reid disappeared in the second half for the Swans after a promising start, but it's another two weeks before they start (potentially) dropping in price, so I'll be hanging on to them til then, and if it goes that badly, will sub them out for one of my perfectly good bench players. Used the Captain Loophole this weekend, naming Gibbs as my VC and not nominating a Captain, so that I'd keep his very impressive score from Thursday night. A similar gamble didn't go so well with my Emergency Loophole. Nominated Duigan as my emergency, he didn't score too badly. Had heard Otten was going to be the sub for the Crows, so assuming he wasn't going to score that well through lack of game time, I subbed him out and put in Hibberd who wasn't playing this weekend. This meant I would get Duigan's score instead of a 0 for Hibberd. Totally backfired, Otten outscored Duigan, and those 13 points would have made a difference in one of my league head-to-head games. ARGH. You win some, you lose some!<b><br />
<br />
MIDFIELDERS<br />
</b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/dtmids.jpg"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-181" height="141" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/dtmids.jpg" title="dtmids" width="490" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
I'm pretty happy with my midfield. It's the most crucial part of a Dream Team, so it's worth it to do your research. Swan is always reliable, Bartel is part of a great midfield at Geelong, and Swallow is really starting to kill it as far as Dream Team is concerned. I'd had Selwood last year, and he was a good addition so I grabbed him again. He scored very poorly today as he was tagging Brent Harvey, so I'll give him a few more weeks, but if it's looking like he's going to be in a tagging role most of the season then it's bye bye Sellers. Liam Anthony was a bit of a gamble for me. I didn't really know a lot about him, and reports were mixed. I liked the look of his numbers, and I needed to get Masten out of my team, so I thought 'What the hell'. He did well today, so he's safe at this stage! Ideally David Swallow is the rookie who will be in the starting position more often than the other three, but given the Gold Coast bye this week, Libba Jr did a cracking job. I would have been happy for him to just get above 50, but he scored 72. Gaff did a reasonable job today, but I think he'll be spending most of his time on the bench as a cash cow, increasing in value until I sell him off for a better player.<b><br />
<br />
RUCKS<br />
</b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/dtrucks.jpg"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-182" height="108" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/dtrucks.jpg" title="dtrucks" width="490" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
Another area where I splurged a bit. Most teams will either have Sandilands OR Cox, being that they're fairly expensive, and in most cases that saved money can be put to better use elsewhere. But hey, why not just get the best? They both scored awesomely this weekend, especially Coxy with a massive score of 142. Fingers crossed they both stay fit and healthy for the duration of the season, but if they don't I'm pretty happy with Tippett as a backup. The fourth ruckman rarely gets used, so Smith is just there as another cash cow.<b><br />
<br />
FORWARDS<br />
</b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/dtfwds.jpg"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-183" height="140" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/dtfwds.jpg" title="dtfwds" width="490" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
This is the only section of my team that I'm a bit 'Aw, man' about. It's not really due to my selections, cause they're good players, it's just that they all played a bit shit this weekend! Late in the week I upgraded Zaharakis to Franklin, so obviously Murphy's Law dictated that Zaha would outscore Buddy by 30 points. Grr. A 72 from Buddy and a 78 from Riewoldt were certainly below my expectations. I had Voldt last year, so I'm confident in the fact he'll bounce back and give me some good scores in the future, but Buddy is on the chopping block. He's got two more weeks to show some form, otherwise he'll be getting traded. Likely for Mayne, he played his butt off this weekend, and I'd expect him to keep it up. Didak was TERRIBLE with 67, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that it was a bad day. Krakouer absolutely nailed it, and Richardson was solid as well. I'll admit I really only picked Darling cause he was a West Coast boy, but he impressed me today.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">So that's my team! I've given myself a far better base to work from than last year, so I'm happy. I'm in 5 head-to-head leagues, won four games today, and lost one (by 6 points! FUUUUUU!). The head-to-heads are my favourite part of DT, but I barely won any bloody matches last year, so it's awesome to get off to such a good start.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">WOO! DREAM TEAM! YEAH!</div>Jacintahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02693089490090435345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749144058687328743.post-19835746752965709042011-03-21T06:02:00.002+08:002011-06-21T16:35:54.915+08:00I'm F**king Maaaaaatt DaaaaamooonnnI don't like doing two posts full of YouTube clips in a row, cause it's SHIT LAZY, but I found these clips while tidying up my hard drive today, and just had to get them back out into the world. Back in ye olden days of 2008, the world was blessed with not one, but two, meme-tastic videos. It was a running gag on Jimmy Kimmel's show that at the end of the night he'd 'bump' Matt Damon's appearance and say something along the lines of 'My apologies to Matt Damon, we're out of time tonight'. Sarah Silverman saw an opportunity where others just saw simple lols. Behold, Part 1:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><object height="350" width="425"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eSfoF6MhgLA"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eSfoF6MhgLA;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"> </object></div><div style="text-align: left;">Oh yes.<br />
<br />
But Jimmy wasn't just going to sit idly by and take it lying down. Them apples were HIS apples, goddammit! A wounded yet defiant man, he countered with this heartfelt ode:<br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><object height="350" width="425"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TwIyLHsk2h4"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TwIyLHsk2h4;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"> </object><br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">OH YES. 'Matt Damon' makes me laugh, but 'Ben Affleck' makes me CRY. And it's not cause I'm swayed by Lance from Nsync being in it. Ok...maybe a bit. A little bit. To this entire exchange I say:<br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/timberho.gif"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-173" height="254" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/timberho.gif" title="timberho" width="200" /></a></div>Jacintahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02693089490090435345noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749144058687328743.post-73342936364136788672011-03-15T04:18:00.002+08:002011-06-21T16:41:59.823+08:00Bullshit music MondayI have been delivered a few aural treats in the last 24 hours, so it would just be rude of me not to share. The first one has gone insanely viral so you may (or, if you're really lucky, may not) have heard of this one. As I type, she is currently the top trending topic in Australia. Good lord. 'Friday' by Rebecca Black.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><object height="350" width="425"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CD2LRROpph0"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CD2LRROpph0;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"> </object></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">I really think Rebecca Black has done the world a favour. Everyone is suffering from a little bit of Charlie Sheen meme fatigue, so it's nice to have something fresh to mock relentlessly. Her lyric about the order of the days of the week will be on a tshirt before the end of the year, mark my words. I was questioning the sanity of whoever would bankroll the recording of the 'song', and the production of the (in parts, quite slick-looking) video. Turns out there's a production company that targets tween girls, writes them a song, records it with shitloads of auto-tune, does up a video and makes them 'stars'. I don't think it's particularly exploitive, if the parents are silly enough to cough up the cash, then that's their problem, but I do feel really sorry for the kids. You're 13, and everyone on the internet is laughing at you. That's gotta be a great self-esteem boost at a particularly fragile time in your life! I did watch a few of the other girls' videos, and while the lyrics were (slightly) better, they were still just as depressing, so we'll just leave it there.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Next up, we have BANGS (yep, capitals), the Sudanese casanova who wants to 'Take U To Da Movies'.<br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><object height="350" width="425"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HmJbJs-9ST0"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HmJbJs-9ST0;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"> </object></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">If I'm being honest, the more I watch this, the more insanely charming I find it. Safe to say that English probably isn't the first language of Señor BANGS, but his dedication to THUG LYFE is clear in any language. Just like Rebecca Black explaining that Sunday comes 'afterwards' Saturday, BANGS explains that 3.30pm is half an hour away from 4.00pm. They educate the kids, man. They provide a SERVICE, and ask for nothing in return. Except for some popcorn maybe.<br />
<br />
I just couldn't leave BANGS there. I needed more. I clicked on the promising sounding 'My Special Girl'.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><object height="350" width="425"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oq0TqqVyeaw"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oq0TqqVyeaw;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"> </object></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">BANGS wants to let you know that you're his 'Special Girl', but he also wants to you know that he's operating at a maximum level of pimp. Exposing his little pigeon chest maximises his pimp status. Looking up his own website maximises his pimp status. Forcing his bling upon you maximises his pimp status. This guy is one badass PIMP, yo! I had to leave the world of BANGS, lest he slap me with his pimp cane. I just can't handle that kind of power.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">As for this next one, I'm going to pre-apologise for posting it, but it needs to be seen. It's a 'local production' called 'Summer' by someone called Vee, but I like to call it 'Scarborough Slappers in bikinis with Garageband and a video camera'. I AM SORRY.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><object height="350" width="425"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wDGhp-p1Kic"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wDGhp-p1Kic;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"> </object></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">I can't even...I can't...oh god. I think the commenter who said 'This is worse than the holocaust' really sums it up, and I can't articulate it any better than that.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">I applaud all the above artists on getting their work out there, as I know I certainly wouldn't be brave enough to release a shining example of my burning shititude onto the internet.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">BRAVO, sirs!</div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">EDIT: <b>BREAKING NEWS!</b> Damn these exciting, fluid memes! Please now feast your ears upon 'Friday' by Rebecca Black, as performed by (a) Bob Dylan (impersonator).</div><br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><object height="350" width="425"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9FISHEO3gsM"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9FISHEO3gsM;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"> </object></div><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">That was a little bit excellent. Kudos.</div>Jacintahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02693089490090435345noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749144058687328743.post-19865049377237031812011-02-10T19:14:00.002+08:002011-06-28T08:35:30.406+08:00Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Good Bye<div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-159" height="392" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/friday-night-lights-4-eeb9von6t3-1280x1024.jpg" title="Friday Night Lights" width="490" /></div><br />
Today when I get home from work, I will sit down to watch the last episode of one of the best dramas of the past decade. I know what you're thinking. 'How can some dumb jock show ACTUALLY be considered a significant contribution to the television landscape? It's about SPORTS!' I know quite a few people who would dismiss Friday Night Lights on the grounds that not only is it a sports show, it's a show about a sport they have no interest in.<br />
<br />
Those people are missing out.<br />
<br />
I will admit I started watching it BECAUSE of the football element, but stayed for the compelling storylines, the knockout performances from a cast largely made up of inexperienced actors, and the genuine connection I felt for the characters. Take Matt Saracen for example. He's 16 when we first meet him. A young kid running a household by himself as his Mum's AWOL and his Dad is in Iraq. He's the backup quarterback for the Dillon Panthers and is pretty unlikely to get a game ahead of their superstar starter, but he's ok with that. Caring for his grandmother with Alzheimer's and concentrating on his studies are more important. He doesn't want to play football in college, and even if he did, not being able to get a game kills his chance of a scholarship, so good results are the only way he's going to get out of Dillion and make something of himself. The Panthers are shattered in the first game of the season when their quarterback, the dynamo who was without question going to lead the school to victory in the State Championship game, makes a poor decision in a tackle and ends up a paraplegic. Saracen has to step up, and not only become the leader of a team that is heavily grieving, but the leader of an entire town relying on him to fulfil the Panthers' destiny of greatness. No pressure, right?<br />
<br />
A teen drama it ain't, and a one-dimensional meathead sports romp it ain't either. I wouldn't really call myself a tv-aholic, I'm weeks behind on most of the shows I watch, and there's plenty of shows I just haven't got around to watching even though I want to, but Friday Night Lights has always been the show I couldn't miss. Being from Australia, where up until recently converage of the NFL on free to air tv only extended to the Superbowl, it really felt like the show was my own little secret, and it felt like my own to enjoy and keep sacred.<br />
<br />
When I heard that the show wasn't going to continue beyond season 5, I was obviously bummed, but y'know. All good things must come to an end. Now that it's D-Day and I have one hour of tv left with my beloved Coach, and Riggs, and Mrs Coach and the rest, I'm not quite so ready to let it go. While I can only imagine that it's written in stone that the Lions will win the State Championship, there are so many other loose ends that I'm scared won't be tied up. Admittedly I should have faith in a show that hasn't put a foot wrong in five years (excluding the 'storyline that shall not be spoken of' in season 2), but there's some big stuff going down. I'm going to be genuinely nervous hitting the play button tonight.<br />
<br />
The outpouring of love for this show on the internet now that we're faced with the end really shows what an impact it's had. Maureen Ryan wrote on <a href="http://www.tvsquad.com/2011/02/09/friday-night-lights/">TV Squad</a> <i>'Friday Night Lights' was very good when it started, but it quickly developed into one of the most innovative, moving and thoughtful shows of the modern era. It wasn't perfect, but television as a whole could learn a lot from what FNL did well.<br />
</i><br />
Alan Stepinwall of <a href="http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan-watching/posts/friday-night-lights-a-look-back-at-its-greatness-and-its-greatest-moments">Hitfix</a> articulates it far better than I:<i> <br />
</i><br />
<i>There's a level of honest, raw humanity in "Friday Night Lights" that few TV dramas have ever achieved. Over and over and over, the show and its characters wore their hearts on their sleeves, in a way that somehow made them more solid than characters on other series of comparable quality.<br />
That rawness made the show great, but it was also likely one of the aspects (along with the high school football setting) that kept the show from being a hit, as most viewers don't turn to TV to be confronted by emotions as powerful as the ones this series brought up. Watching "Friday Night Lights" often felt like being put through a ringer. You felt like part of the town, and the team, and you bled with the characters and cried with them, and on occasion you got to soar with them, too. And a lot of people simply don't want to get that close to the fictional characters they watch - don't feel that experiencing the devastating lows is worth also getting to share in the glorious highs.<br />
</i><br />
One thing's for certain. Tonight I will cry like a little bitch. Be it at the opening credits (99% chance, they make me teary at the best of times), if (when) the Lion win and Vince gets to share the victory with his recovering drug-addict mother (80%), if Luke gets to follow his dreams to college (90%), or if (and this is a BIG IF) Smash comes back and at any point leads the 'Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose' warcry (100%, I'm tearing up now just thinking about it).<b><i><br />
<br />
Riggins: </i></b><i>Here's to God, and football, and ten years from now Street, good friends livin' large in Texas.<b> </b></i><br />
<i><b>Street: </b>Texas forever.<br />
</i><br />

These aren't in strict order (well, not past the first three, anyway), and at no point do I claim they were the 'best' movies of 2010, just the ones I enjoyed the most. Keep in mind that I am a girl, and will often value cute boys and explosions over technical prowess in any area of film-making. Here we go.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-139" height="328" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/inception.jpg" title="Inception" width="400" /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>1. Inception</b><br />
I don't think I really even need to justify this one at #1. It was clearly the most ambitious movie of the year, which resulted in it being the most talked-about. It looked amazing (and no, I'm not just talking about JGL in a suit), the plot was so pretzel-like that I actually forgot how many levels they were at and had a bit of a freak out at the end, and the CONCEPT itself was just so thought-provoking. Loved it.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-140" height="300" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/thekingsspeech.jpg" title="thekingsspeech" width="400" /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>2. The King's Speech</b><br />
There were just so many levels in which to enjoy this movie. Appreciation for the script, appreciation of the acting (props to Colin Firth's dialect coach), and appreciation of the cinematography. As a photographer watching this movie, it was like being kicked in the face with the Rule of Thirds. The way they used it to keep the mood so rigid while all this snappy dialogue was going on was just...delicious. The shot where Colin Firth was smooshed into the front third and looking out of the frame made me squeal a little. They were BREAKING THE RULES and I felt so naughty watching it. Oh, and the story was great. And it was the first time I had ever warmed to Helena Bonham-Carter in a role. But the best bit was the way it looked. Oh god. I need to watch it again right now...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-141" height="250" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/scottpilgrim.jpg" title="scottpilgrim" width="400" /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>3. Scott Pilgrim vs the World</b></div><div style="text-align: left;">There have been arguments that this movie was a little inaccessible as it was clearly aimed at a very niche group of people, but being that I'm a child of the 90s who played 8-bit video games (thus being smack-bang in the middle of that niche), I find those arguments IRRELEVANT. I knew nothing of the comics before seeing the movies, so it was like riding a magical slingshot into this mystery world where the ruling factors were indie rock and video games. I mean COME ON. This movie is an embodiment of all that is good and pure in this world, and I will hear nothing to the contrary.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-142" height="320" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/theblindside.jpg" title="theblindside" width="400" /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>4. The Blind Side</b></div><div style="text-align: left;">I have many weaknesses, but one of my top 5 weaknesses is uplifting sporting movies. I am taking a tiny bit of liberty with this one, as technically it was released in 2009, but it was released here at the start of 2010, so BACK OFF. The true story of Michael Oher, a poor kid who was adopted by a white well-to-do family and went on to become a trillionaire superstar with the Baltimore Ravens. I can't say I was convinced that Sandra Bullock deserved the Oscar, the star of the movie was by far Quinton Aaron. The constant look of hopelessness in his eyes made for somewhat stressful viewing. You just feel so INVOLVED from the get go.<b></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-143" height="350" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/thesocialnetwork.jpg" title="thesocialnetwork" width="219" /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>5. The Social Network</b></div><div style="text-align: left;">I got to admit, I wasn't planning on liking this one. How good could it be? A movie about some douchey nerd who made some website (that I am painfully reliant on for my day-to-day dealings)? What I was faced with was a fascinating look into the mechanics of a growing empire. The struggle when a friendship becomes a business partnership. It's a bit of a slow-grind subtle movie, but it's worth it. As a ridiculous boy band fan, I cannot comment on Justin Timberlake in an unbiased manner, but I thought he was awesome. He's a natural in front of the camera, it's just a shame that he may never get taken seriously as an actor. The script was great considering the strange subject matter, and the ending could not have been more perfect. If there was an award for 'Best Movie Ending' this would have taken it out.<b></b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-144" height="300" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/kickass.jpg" title="kickass" width="400" /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>6. Kick Ass</b></div><div style="text-align: left;">I loved this movie so hard. Oh man. This is the only one I saw twice at the cinema, mainly because I went into it totally blind with no idea what to expect, and subsequently had my MIND BLOWN so had to see it again to really appreciate all the stuff I missed while my brains were leaking over the floor. I can't compare it to the comic cause I still haven't read it (eep), so my opinion is that of a moviegoer, not a comic book geek. That first scene where Hit Girl wails on a room full of dudes is one of the greatest things to happen in cinema this year.<b> </b></div><div style="text-align: center;"><b><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-145" height="270" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/toystory3.jpg" title="toystory3" width="400" /></b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>7. Toy Story 3</b></div><div style="text-align: left;">As someone who still has a bunny she received when she was 6, yeah, I can relate to feeling an attachment to inanimate objects. I don't even know what I can say about this movie that hasn't been said by everyone else. The story was really strong, the new characters were great, and I had a cry headache from trying not to sob in front of people in the cinema. That scene in the incinerator...I felt sick. Solidarity in the face of certain death. Man. *wipes tear away*</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-146" height="295" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/secretariat.jpg" title="secretariat" width="400" /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>8. Secretariat</b></div><div style="text-align: left;">Remember my weakness for uplifting sporting movies? Combine that with my weakness for uplifting horse movies. BAM! Secretariat. I've seen 99% of the horseracing movies out there, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that this is my favourite. I judge racing movies on the quality of the actual race sequences, and this movie nailed it. I guess with Seabiscuit the film-makers were stuck in a hard place because they had to SHOW Tobey Maguire on the horse, but the blatantly fake horse head that he was 'riding' totally killed it for me. Secretariat is not as much of a 'fluffy' movie as you'd expect from Disney, but I guess being a well-known true story they couldn't take too many liberties. The version I 'obtained' is a really bad cam version, so I look forward to it coming out on DVD so I can watch it properly.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-147" height="320" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/dearjohn.jpg" title="dearjohn" width="400" /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>9. Dear John</b></div><div style="text-align: left;">First point: yes, it is a Nicholas Sparks adaption, no, you won't cry like you did in The Notebook. I guess the reason I liked this movie so much was the story, so it's really nothing to do with the movie itself, but...whatever. It is the classic Nicholas Sparks 'Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. Tragedy ensues', but it really all comes a bit out of left field, and it's not your traditional love story at all. You won't cry like you did in The Notebook, but your heart will break a million times. Considering Channing Tatum has only been in dopey boofhead movies for most of his career, and actually had to use his skills instead of his abs in this one, he did a good job.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-149" height="300" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/theateam.jpg" title="theateam" width="400" /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>10. The A Team</b></div><div style="text-align: left;">SPEAKING of dopey boofhead movies! :D To say this movie shit all over Iron Man 2 is one major understatement. There was cute boys, explosions, and lols. I've been getting into the original A Team as they've been showing eps on the tv, and the movie captured the vibe perfectly. Though...new Face is way cuter.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>11. Stuff I Saw That I Really Liked and Just Missed Out<br />
</b></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>How To Train Your Dragon</b><br />
I liked it a lot, but I wasn't doing backflips over it. To be honest I was too preoccupied trying to work out which character was being voiced by David Tennant. But it was a great lesson in 'You can be awesome even if you're a little bit shit'.<b><br />
Valentines Day<br />
</b>Yes. The one with Ashton Kutcher. Yes. The one that is a gigantic rip-off of Love Actually. Yes. That one. I absolutely loved it, and it so so very nearly made my top 10. I mean, c'mon. The movie ended and I LIKED Ashton Kutcher! Magic movie!<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Red Hill</b><br />
It's probably super condescending to say, but it was great for an Aussie movie. The suspense covered up the plot holes and questionable character motivations. But there was Ryan Kwanten, and guns, and horses. Also a panther. No, I don't know either.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Remember Me<br />
</b>So, remember how we all loved R-Pattz as Cedric Diggory, but wouldn't touch him after he entered into 'that franchise?' Well, we all just need to ride out the wave of horror for the next few years, cause once those festering excuses for literature are finished with, hopefully we can expect more movies like this one. It was a bit of a slow burn, but the boy can ACT! And be CHARMING! And ENGAGING! I do suggest watching this one for the ending. You're cruising along, thinking 'Hm, I'm not really super invested in these characters' and then BAM. <br />

I'm sure there's a better way to get a picture of them, but whatEVER.<br/><p style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/taladen.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-131" title="taladen" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/taladen.jpg" alt="" width="342" height="600" /></a></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">This is the first guy I made, a Night Elf Druid. His range attack sucked balls and I didn't know how to do anything else, so within about ten seconds of logging in to WoW for the very first time I was dead. Sure, I probably shouldn't have pissed off that pig, but we learn from our mistakes. I only just yesterday got him up to level 10, but I don't really know if I'll continue with him. I also only just got him pants. He was wearing that tunic and what was essentially matching underwear, and he looked like he was representing the Gay Pride faction of Azeroth. I need to get him some shoes, he looks like a filthy hippie.</p><br/><p style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/mcclayne.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-132" title="mcclayne" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/mcclayne.jpg" alt="" width="393" height="600" /></a></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">This is the second guy I made (but on my first night, like Taladen), a Human Hunter. I like that he has a wolf (named Wuff), but I don't like that he looks like he's wearing a dress. I've yet to spend the time tracking him down some MAN PANTS. His guild tabard looks rad though. Check him out! I'm guessing he will probably end up being my Alliance main, but I don't like him THAT much, and to be honest it really pisses me off that his name is displayed as 'Mcclayne' instead of the intended ' McClayne'. He's technically named after John McClane, but he does not have anywhere near the required badassery to be worthy of that title.</p><br/><p style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/typhir.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-133" title="typhir" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/typhir.jpg" alt="" width="369" height="600" /></a></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">Typhir is my faaaaaavourite. But I think it's mainly just cause he's a cow. Though he's a massively badass black cow. With hate in his eyes. His pet thing is really very crap, an ostrich type thing I called KFC, but it does its job. Of killing fellow birds in a brutal manner. He'll definitely be my Horde main, and will actually probably be my MAIN main, despite the fact that most of my friends are Alliance, so he'll have no one to hang out with, but does it LOOK LIKE HE CARES?</p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">No.</p><br/><p style="text-align:left;"> </p>Jacintahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02693089490090435345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749144058687328743.post-12507434728090569902010-12-16T20:00:00.000+08:002011-06-21T09:18:46.048+08:00I am Murloc. No, *I* am Murloc.So, I'm not really the type to do a blog just to post a YouTube video...but I am today. Last night I was trying to get my Human to 10, for the ridiculous reason that I downloaded the WoW Armory app but it doesn't recognise your characters until they're at least a 10. For the record I only got to 9 before I got bored, but anyway.<br/><br/>The POINT is that I encountered (and killed the hell out of) my first Murloc last night. And then I found this song on someone's Tumblr, and I lol'd. You'll lol too.<br/><p style="text-align:center;"><object height="350" width="425"><br/> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IHgRAlkpxJw"><br/> <param name="wmode" value="transparent"><br/> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IHgRAlkpxJw;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"><br/> </object></p>Jacintahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02693089490090435345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749144058687328743.post-51844485500348352062010-12-15T19:20:00.000+08:002011-06-21T09:18:46.048+08:00World of WHAT-NOW?I'm back, y'all! I'm going to try to not be such a lazy blogger in 2011, but you know. I get bored quickly. Blogs feel like homework, and if I'm procrastinating I can almost always find something else to do.<br/><br/>But really I'm back because I have news. Yeah! Firstly, I have <a href="http://wallofnerd.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">a Tumblr</a>. I did actually think of moving the whole blog over to Tumblr, but while it's easy to generate content, you just don't have as much opportunity for discussion & feedback as you do on a normal blog. So, main blog will stay here, and little funny bits and pieces will be posted over there.<br/><br/>Second, well...it's something I'm not really that proud of:<br/><p style="text-align:center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-122" title="wow-sers" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/wow.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="375" /></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">I've started playing World of Warcraft. Well, I guess 'playing' is maybe a bit of a stretch, 'running around getting lost' is more what I'm doing, but nonetheless I'm participating. It's only been a couple of days, but I do think I'm destined to be a bit of a self-loathing WoW-er. I've had a lot of friends who've played WoW for a long time, and for me it's always seemed to be the final barrier between casual nerdiness and epic nerd-dom. Like 'Sure, I'm a bit of a nerd, but it's not like I play WARCRAFT!' It was an early Christmas gift from <a href="http://lukemiltonwrites.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Luke</a> and <a href="http://hogsandwich.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Suzanne</a>, and while I suspect it was a thinly veiled attempt to get more real-life friends in their guild, it would have been suuuuuper rude of me to reject the gift. So, A-Warcrafting I went.</p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">The whole experience started off really badly. After 6 hours of installing, and downloading, and swearing, and wishing I'd never bothered with any of it, I finally had it all done and made up a character. Hurrah! Then I tried to go into the world, and my computer blue-screened. Tried again, another crash. Tried again, crashed again. Uninstalled the game and tried to just run it off a hard drive. CRASH. Checked all my computer's specs against the recommended specs for the game, and my video card exceeded what was required. Siiiigh. Tried it on my netbook (yes, the baby computer designed only for reading emails and casual web surfing) and it worked fine. WHAT. I'm not exactly thrilled at the idea of playing the game on a 10" screen with a computer that does struggle with the graphics on occasion, but I seem to have no other option.</p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">My second hurdle was the gameplay. I'm a child of the SNES/Gameboy/Playstation era, and apart from a joystick with the old Commodore 64 I've only EVER used game controllers to play games, and even then, I'm not really a 'gamer'. The co-ordination required to use keys and mouse to do things was just TOO MUCH. I 'played' for about two hours on that first night (though really, most of it was spent figuring out how to, like, walk) and my brain was super fried. I was lucky enough to have some guild members around to help me though, but at that point I was kind of over it and not really sure that I was going to bother continuing.</p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">Played a little by myself the next day, and got my co-ordination figured out a bit more, but I still wasn't overly enjoying it. I'd abandoned my Night Elf druid in favour of a Human hunter, cause the pet wolf was a lifesaver while I was trying to not die.</p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">Was talking to a few friends the next day who gave me some super useful tips which streamlined the gameplay and dampened some of my frustration. Using 'W' to go forward was WAY easier than holding both mouse buttons, and then 'Auto-run' was even better. Auto-loot was saving a bit of time, though I haven't quite worked out where I can sell my extra items, so it made my bag fill up pretty quickly. Started a Tauren to try out all these tricks, and got to level 9 in half the time it took me to get to level 7 with the Human. Progress!</p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">It's still kind of fiddly, and my Achilles Heel is my inability to turn around quickly, but it's OKAY. Two days ago I was hovering over the button to kill my account, but I've moved from fiery rage to grudging tolerance so I guess I'll just stick at it. The only real problem now is that playing with the Tauren makes my Human look super boring, so I want a werewolf guy, but to get a werewolf guy I'd need to buy the other two expansions. I feel gross enough over having to pay money to keep playing the game in the first place, but paying EXTRA money to play it? I'm just not up to that point yet.</p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">I'm clearly not above accepting gifts, though.</p>Jacintahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02693089490090435345noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6749144058687328743.post-9814029718685242472010-05-13T06:46:00.000+08:002011-06-21T09:18:46.048+08:00Happy John Barrowman Day!<p style="text-align:center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-109" title="barrowman06" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/barrowman06.jpg" alt="" width="302" height="250" /></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">While the origins of John Barrowman Day are less than heroic (we discovered that John Barrowman had a CD, we gathered together to listen to it and had a wonderful time, and thus it was decided we would come together on May 12 every year to celebrate the general awesomeness that resulted from John Barrowman), the main thing is the CELEBRATION of John Barrowman Day.</p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">Because, let's face it, John Barrowman is pretty freakin awesome. Let's have a look at some of the awesome things John Barrowman does:</p><br/><p style="text-align:center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-111" title="barrowman08" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/barrowman08.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="350" /></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">John Barrowman is the head of Torchwood, and he'll fuck up your shit with some alien tech. Then he'll try to have sex with you. Often he'll succeed.</p><br/><p style="text-align:center;"><object height="350" width="425"><br/> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/UA72AuQWTDQ"><br/> <param name="wmode" value="transparent"><br/> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/UA72AuQWTDQ;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"><br/> </object></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">John Barrowman SINGS THE HITS! Of the 80s. For the record, I do actually own and genuinely like this album. It's insanely charming. But, er, moving right along...</p><br/><p style="text-align:center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-112" title="barrowman02" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/barrowman02.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="270" /></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">John Barrowman shoots LASERS out of his fucking HANDS! Forget Iron Man and his repulsor glove crap, John Barrowman will razzle-dazzle you to death at 100 paces. And he will look insanely happy while doing it.</p><br/><p style="text-align:center;"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-113" title="barrowman03" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/barrowman03.jpg?w=192" alt="" width="192" height="300" /></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">John Barrowman appreciates the unquestionable humour of kilts. Also he probably likes flashing people. And he's Scottish, despite the, er, American accent.</p><br/><p style="text-align:center;"><object height="350" width="425"><br/> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/w1XOfHax6Q8"><br/> <param name="wmode" value="transparent"><br/> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/w1XOfHax6Q8;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"><br/> </object></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">John Barrowman is such a consumate professional that he can say THAT LINE with something resembling a straight face. The poor, poor cat. Wait, he was talking about her cat, right?</p><br/><p style="text-align:center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-114" title="barrowman04" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/barrowman04.jpg" alt="" width="420" height="300" /></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">John Barrowman made out with SPIKE from BUFFY! He also made out with some other guys, but they weren't as awesome as SPIKE from BUFFY!</p><br/><p style="text-align:center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-115" title="barrowman" src="http://wallofnerd.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/barrowman05.jpg" alt="" width="224" height="480" /></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">John Barrowman dresses his dog in....people...........clothes. Okay, alright, that's not that great. But what IS GREAT, is this video:</p><br/><p style="text-align:center;"><object height="350" width="425"><br/> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8lJKpgHVKOQ"><br/> <param name="wmode" value="transparent"><br/> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8lJKpgHVKOQ;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" height="350" width="425"><br/> </object></p><br/><p style="text-align:left;">First, he kisses David Tennant, then he unleashes sass on the Comic Con audience.
